Siem Reap is the small but rapidly expanding town that serves as the base for the temples, which are set in protected jungle 8km away. Angkor itself is a fantastic and magical place. The varying character, isolation and romance of the sites leave a strong and lasting impression.

Angkor Thom, the ancient city, was constructed by King Jayavarman VII (1181-1218) in the 12th century, as one small example of the Angkor Empire at its pinnacle, a 20th century visitor to the area must image the walled city of Ankor Thom. Within the city one can admire the famous Bayon Temples, which emerges from the jungle as an incredible forest of heads. Its 100 metre wide moat extending 12 kilometre, larger than any walled city of medieval Europe, protected a population of as much as 1 million people.

Bayon was built by Jayavarman VII in the exact center of the city of Angkor Thom, it is unique for its 54 towers decorated with over 200 smiling faces of Avalokiteshvara. Its very well preserved bas-reliefs represent everyday life in the 12th century.

Elephants Terrace measures 350 meters and is decorated with carvings, including elephants in hunting scenes, garudas and lions. Built under Jayavarman VII, it was viewing platform from which kings and their courts watched military displays of pomp and pageantry.

Angkor Wat, one of the 7 greatest architectural wonders of the world, complex the spirtual heart and identity of the Khmer people. Angkor, the ancient capital of the Khmer empire built between the 9th and 13th century on the waste alluvial plane north of the Tonle Sap Lake (Great Lake), stand as unrivaled legacy of powerful and industrious Khmer race. Unlike the other entire temple, which face east, Angkor Wat with its 5 towers faces west and it is a representation of the Hindu Cosmology. It took 37 years with more than 25,000 laborers to complete.

Phnom Bakheng Hill was built by Yacovarman I, the son of indravarman. He built his capital Yacodharapure around the hill of Phnom Bakheng. It is the home to the first of the mountain temples built in the near vicinity of Angkor.
